SUMMARY OF COUNCIL DECISIONS JUNE 3 2008
COUNCIL APPROVED POLICY FOR WORKING TOGETHER WITH COMMUNITY BOARDS AND DISTRICT COMMITTEES
.This was a very valuable outcome to all the consultative work that took place in 2006/7. This policy is the major development that is now in place and stays in place until it is reviewed and formally modified. I expect to meet with the new Divisional Manager to discuss the implementation of this policy
DISTRICT PLAN DISCUSSION
There was a lengthy but valuable discussion on the concern about high rise development in the city and future of the CBD. This major issue is priority for HCC planning staff. If Council keeps a lid on staffing and its salaries, current staff is unlikely to be able to meet all the priorities including ours on residential and slip slopes. We are pressing for an initial meeting and will keep you informed about wider public or other meetings with Associations and Groups.
Other News
Vandals at work at Korohiwa
We know Korohiwa is a popular place, but vandals, Boyracers, bottle and can droppers and those who smashed the fence and ripped up the grass last weekend are not welcome! If you see them get their numbers. Remember to lock your car if you are walking or biking too.
LANDSLIP WORKS - 507/509 MARINE DR, EASTBOURNE
The demolition of these two houses is to take place is now well underway.
The removal of the retaining walls is almost completed also. The installation of stormwater systems and site shaping will then follow but this is subject to weather. Traffic management will be in play for the entire process.
REMOVAL OF NORFOLK PINES FROM BISHOP PARK
This note from HCC explains why three trees have been felled :
"Some time ago it was brought to our attention that the Norfolk Pines on Bishop Park (the 10 on the Marine Dr side of the park) appeared to be in poor condition and definitely in a state of decline. Accordingly, a qualified arborist was engaged to visually assess the trees and provide a general overview as to the health and how HCC needs to deal with them.
The report was submitted and while there's still some work to be done on the results (i.e. core samples are being taken and tested) the general conclusions are that the trees are in poor to average condition, with some trees in really bad condition.
These are the two in the northern section (2nd and 3rd from the north) of the park and one directly opposite 49 Marine Dr (5th tree from the north). The two in the north have browned off significantly and are dying. The other had its top blown out in the storms some years ago and a climbing inspection showed signs of decay in the wound. It is also displaying stunted growth nodes similar to the dying specimens in the north.
Due to poor health and/or loss of natural form and characteristic I plan to remove these three trees in the next 2-3 weeks. As a matter of courtesy I will also drop in a letter to the residents opposite the park informing them of the removal.
A decision on the remaining seven specimen trees will be made once the results are submitted but you will be informed of the results and certainly informed before anything is done".
ECB was advised before this took place.
